DESCRIPTIONA side roll, which is also called a lateral roll, is essentially a hand line system on wheels that is moved from setting to setting by a gas powered engine. BASIC OPERATIONThe lateral roll system is set up in the field. That section of the field is irrigated for a predetermined length of time. To move the line, the water is disconnected, allowed to drain and then the engine is started up to move the system. Typically the move lengths consist of 50 or 60 foot increments. Then the water is simply connected back into the system, turned on and run for another watering cycle. IRRIGATION SETTINGSTypical settings for the lateral roll system are 8, 12 and 24 hours but it us possible to have any length of time desired. It normally takes about 30-45 minutes to drain and re-fill the lateral roll to complete the move. OPERATING PRESSUREOperating pressure is from 40-60 psi fir the standard impact sprinkler heads utilized with this system. LABOR BENEFITSLateral roll systems require 1.5 to 2.5 hours of labor per day which means low labor requirements.
